Skin is the human body’s largest organ. It’s something we’ve all got. (Well duh!) Our skin protects us from bacteria and because of this we need to keep it clean, free from harmful nasties and everything in between. When using skincare products including all natural exfoliators, it is important to know the different types of skin and how you can tell what your skin type is. Although there are hundreds of benefits with so many ingredients available today, using a product for one skin type will often mean it won’t be so effective on another.

Skin is commonly categorised into five different types. Normal, Dry, Oily, Combination and Sensitive.

Often, normal skin is a broad term used to describe skin that is well balanced. If you’ve got normal skin, your pores generally wont come across being too oily or dry. With normal skin, you’re most likely to have smaller pores, fewer lines and wrinkles and an even skin tone. So you’ve got normal skin, but not sure what to do now? Well, you’ve got to maintain and protect it from everyday life, pollution, sweat and many other nasties in the environment.

Difficult to keep your skin moisturised and hydrated? This could most likely be because you have dry skin. People with dry skin tend to produce less oil than normal skin which results in a more tight and rough feeling. This often also leads to irritated and itchy skin. Because the skin is moisture depleted, it becomes more vulnerable to the environment making it hard to shield it from bacteria. At this point, you probably guessed it!

People with oily skin will generally over produce oil. This usually leads to a ‘greasy’ or ‘shiny’ look on their skin which often results in more visible blackheads or whiteheads. If you’ve got oily skin, it’s important to find a product that balances the oil production and will prevent breakouts.

Combination skin will include more than one skin type across different areas of the face. For example, your forehead and nose, also known as a ’t-zone’ may come across oily however you could have a dry cheek area. Like people with oily skin, it is vital to find something balancing which will ensure your oil production is steady.

Sensitive skin keeping you worried from trying a new skincare regime? We totally understand! Sensitive skin will often react with irritation, inflammation and redness. If you’ve got sensitive skin, natural skincare products are the way to go! This is because certain chemicals with intense ingredients may irritate the skin resulting in a reaction (and we don’t want that!)
